Lemmata
Setup

Installing TeX

Lemmata uses the TeX distribution on your computer to build PDFs: TeX Live, or MiKTeX on Windows. If it can't find one, it shows these same instructions on first launch.

Recommended ≈1.2 GB

Covers almost every paper, thesis and slide deck.

sudo pacman -S --needed texlive-basic texlive-latex texlive-latexrecommended texlive-latexextra texlive-fontsrecommended texlive-bibtexextra texlive-binextra texlive-mathscience biber

Full ≈5.6 GB

Every package, so missing-package prompts never come up.

sudo pacman -S --needed texlive texlive-lang biber

What Lemmata does on first launch

  1. It looks for TeX on your PATH and in the usual install folders, including /Library/TeX/texbin on macOS and /usr/local/texlive.
  2. If it finds nothing, it shows the command for your system. Open terminal puts that command in a terminal and waits for you to press Enter. Lemmata never installs anything or runs sudo by itself.
  3. When the install has finished, click Check again. If TeX is somewhere unusual, choose its bin folder instead.

What it checks for

  • latexmk pdflatexRequired.
  • synctexRecommended. Without it, jumping between PDF and source is off.
  • biber bibtexRecommended, for bibliographies.
  • xelatex lualatexRecommended, for documents that need these engines.

Missing recommended tools are listed but don't stop you. TeX Live older than 2022 gets a warning but still works.

Missing a package later?

When a document needs a package you don't have, the Problems panel names the exact command that installs it, for example sudo pacman -S texlive-pictures or tlmgr install pgfplots. MiKTeX installs missing packages by itself when auto-install is on, which is the default.
